Coal-Fired Electricity Performance Standards Advance, Indicate Carbon Policy Trends

In late August, 2011 Federal Environment Minister Peter Kent confirmed the federal government’s intention to regulate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the coal-fired electricity sector. The proposed regulations are expected to apply performance standards on new coal-fired electricity generation units and facilities which have reached the end of their useful life. The government has also said that it is pursuing similar performance standards on GHG emissions for other industrial sectors.
