Cool Roof Technology Benefits Recreational Facility
November 30, 2010
The Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club (TC&SC) and Durock Alfacing International Limited recently held a joint event to present the features and benefits of a new cool roof installation on 5008 square metres of the TC&SC facilities.

The TC&SC Cool Roof
A large flat roof and various peaked roofs at TC&SC were reroofed using All Weather Roofing’s TOUGH ROOF system. The system greatly reduces landfill, energy costs, and capital costs because it never needs to be replaced.
The roofs were specified with three inches of R-22 ISO insulation which necessitated raising and altering 40 rooftop air handling units (including ducts, gas lines and electrical connections). The ISO insulation will lower winter heat loss thereby reducing heating costs for the facilities, while benefiting the environment.
The TS&SC opted for DuRock’s TioCoat white reflective coating, a technology that is sprayed on rooftops to keep them cool to the touch during hot summer days. Re-Coating the TioCoat every 11 years extends the warranty of the product which is meant to reduce both financial and environmental costs associated with air conditioning.
“In the past few years, the club has aggressively tried to reduce utility consumption, through operational initiatives and investment in green capital projects,” says Steven Pataki, Facilities Manager at TS&SC. “It is our goal to become utility cost neutral, by consumption reduction in combination with alternative energy generation. Our new cool roofs are a prime example.”
The TS&SC offset some of the costs of the cool roof project by receiving grants from the City of Toronto ECO ROOF Incentive Program and BOMA Demand Management energy reduction program.
